Durham, North Carolina, is believed to be the site of an ancient Native American village named Adshusheer. It was the site of the largest troop surrender to end the Civil War.  But the glory days of the early 20th Century, when Bull Durham was recognized worldwide and it was the home of the most successful African American Community in America, have been succeeded by a vibrant community celebrating education, medicine, and high technology.

Durham’s Cultural Master Plan examined the need for a history museum and concluded  “There are an array of programs in various historic sites and a number of walking tours. What is missing is a centrally located facility that can knit all these elements together into a coherent story of Durham’s past and its relevance to the present."

"This is one idea that virtually everyone is in agreement on.  The value of it has not been disputed during the planning process. It is time to make it a reality!"

This creates our destination, yet how we get there is an exciting journey in service to Durham that is yet to be determined.  You can help make the dream of a Museum of Durham History become a reality.
