In November 2021, retired judge Elaine O’Neal became the first African American woman elected as mayor of Durham. Prior to the election, O’Neal served as a North Carolina District Court Judge, and was named Chief District Court Judge in 2002. In 2010, she was elected as the first female Superior Court Judge for Durham County.
