Get Involved - Exhibit Sponsorship: Playhouses and Picture Palaces

On Friday, October 16, 2026, the Museum of Durham History will open a new exhibit entitled Playhouses and Picture Palaces: The Historical Theaters of Downtown Durham, exploring the 18 theaters that animated Downtown Durham from the 1890s through the 1960s.

                            .

Though we’re presenting 70 years of Durham history, the Carolina Theatre will be front and center.  We’ll be celebrating their Centennial in 2026 as Downtown Durham’s sole remaining historical – and historic – theater.  (They’re even loaning us some rare artifacts from their attic!)

                      .

You’ll discover the wonderful spaces that presented operas, movies, vaudeville, and more, to entertain audiences in Downtown Durham, including the Central Business District and Hayti.  You’ll learn how the theatrical arts and amusements have enhanced the Durham community since its early years and how they contributed to the City’s past and current economic and cultural landscape.

Please consider a sponsorship donation to help us create the best possible exhibit and see your name listed at the Museum as a proud underwriter.
