About - A Permanent Home for Durham’s Stories

Durham’s stories belong to everyone. For thirteen years, the Museum of Durham History has brought Durham’s compelling stories to life in an 800-square-foot gallery in a former bus transfer station. In that limited space, the Museum has become a successful and recognized presence in the heart of downtown. It has welcomed more than 100,000 visitors and grown its economic impact to $1.6 million annually. But the Museum is constrained by its small size. It cannot house the exhibits, educational programs, community conversations, collections care and family experiences Durham is asking for and deserves.

The physical expansion being proposed is not simply about more space. It is about what that space makes possible. It is about dramatically improving services. It is about creating a place where young people experience their hometown’s history and where residents come together to understand the people, experiences and decisions that shaped this unique community.

A Vision Years in the Making

Focused input helped outline a broader program of services, and a joint City-County-Museum working group recommended that expansion be pursued at the current site at 500 W. Main Street in order to maintain easy accessibility, strengthen a gateway to downtown, and connect with transit, walking and biking networks and the future Durham Rail Trail. In July of this year, the City offered the Museum a 30-year lease for its current location.

The working group’s recommendation calls for a multi-functional, 20,000-square-foot facility to accommodate:

  • Flexible and rotating exhibits, including community-curated stories
  • A larger children’s area and capacity for school groups
  • Multipurpose learning rooms and educator partnerships
  • Community conversations, shared programming and convening space
  • Collections care and exhibit-development space
  • Staff support and outdoor gathering areas

Bird’s Eye View of a Potential Design

Next Step: Architectural Design

Design is what turns a strong idea into a responsible public project. The immediate request is a coordinated $2.5 million City-County investment in architectural design—the responsible next step toward making a permanent Museum possible.

This funding is for architectural design. It is not a request to fund construction of the new Museum.

The design work will translate the approved vision into a practical, costed and fundable plan. It will establish reliable scope, costs, phasing and schedule; clarify the decisions that come next; and allow Durham to assess the project responsibly before pursuing construction.

Why Public Investment Comes First

A clear public commitment is essential to unlock philanthropic participation and a Museum-led capital campaign. Major private fundraising depends on a defined site, design and public partnership.

The long-term model is a joint effort that is not reliant solely on government. Public design funding provides the foundation for a credible project that private donors can support.

A coordinated $2.5 million City-County investment will turn the vision into a costed, fundable plan—and provide the leverage needed to pursue the public-private capital campaign that comes next.

Imagine the Possibilities!

An Investment in Durham’s Future

A permanent Museum of Durham History will be more than just a larger building. It will be an inviting destination that strengthens downtown, welcomes visitors and deepens Durham’s distinctive identity. The Museum is an ongoing investment in education, preservation, public understanding, downtown vitality and Durham’s quality of life.

The decision before Durham is focused and responsible: a coordinated $2.5 million City-County investment in architectural design.
