Why I Said Yes to the MoDH…
Posted on December 30, 2025
Happy Holidays Durham! This season we are reflecting on why we do what we do, and the amazing people who help us share our city’s history. We got to sit down with new board member, Renée Clark, who had this to say:
“Reflecting on why I joined the Museum of Durham History Board this past year brought back a flood of memories. Growing up in the eastern part of Durham on Briggs Avenue, I spent countless hours playing in the park near YE Smith Elementary School. I remember accompanying my brother to Wright’s Barbershop on Main Street and, if I was lucky, getting a treat from Woolworth’s afterward. The history I experienced in those places shaped me profoundly.

Fast forward to my high school years at Hillside High, where I thrived in the theater program, band, and dance company. These experiences allowed me to bring different characters to life and discover my own purpose. Witnessing Durham’s growth and evolution over time, I feel a strong desire to preserve these memories. Sitting with my grandparents, listening to their stories about growing up and their experiences in Durham, I realized the importance of sharing these narratives. Now, I have the opportunity to ensure that not only my stories but those of others in this great city are told authentically.

During this season of reminiscence and reflection, I invite you to join me in preserving and sharing the stories of Durham’s citizens. Let’s make sure our history is not forgotten, but celebrated and expressed genuinely. Please support the Museum of Durham History this season so that our memories can become stories that live on forever.”
We are so grateful for wonderful volunteers and board members like Renée, and for visitors like you! If you’d like to give a gift today and help preserve Durham’s stories, visit our website here –> https://www.museumofdurhamhistory.org/get-involved/donate-now
