Museum of Durham History

The Museum of Durham History, in partnership with the Pauli Murray Center for History and Social Justice, will host a free outdoor movie night on the lawn, featuring the Peabody Award-winning documentary My Name Is Pauli Murray on Friday, September 11, 2026 at 7 p.m. at Durham Central Park Pavilion (501 Foster St.). Bring blankets or lawn chairs and settle in for an evening under the stars! The event is free and family-friendly, with free popcorn provided (while it lasts). The evening is part of the Museum’s programming connected to its current exhibit, To Love and Live Free: The 1986 Mayoral Recall and the Origins of Durham Pride, and leads into Durham Pride Week later in September. The event will explore the life and legacy of Durham-raised Pauli Murray while connecting Murray’s story to Durham’s history of LGBTQ+ activism and the ongoing work of the Pauli Murray Center for History and Social Justice.

Before the film, Pauli Murray Center Board Chair Jesse Huddleston will offer remarks providing local context about the Center’s work and its connections to Durham Pride, LGBTQ+ history, and activism in the community.

The screening is part of the “Museum Beyond Walls,” an ongoing effort to bring Durham’s history into the community, while creating opportunities to explore the people, events, and movements that have shaped Durham.

This event is made possible by a grant from the Durham Merchants Association Charitable Foundation in support of To Love and Live Free.
