Library Fest 2024 is back with an enchanting array of events celebrating the wonders of nature and the essence of storytelling. Cap off a week of festivities at the Main Library (300 N. Roxboro St.) on Saturday, April 13, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM for a captivating family workshop, where participants of all ages will immerse themselves in the art of crafting story quilts. This event is FREE and open to the public. Capacity is limited, so participants are asked to register HERE.

Presented by The Museum of Durham History, Durham County Library, Durham Library Foundation, and the Forest at Duke, this year’s Library Fest is themed “The Nature Edition,” exploring nature in its broadest sense – encompassing not only the natural world but also the intrinsic characteristics of our lives and memories.

The highlight of the week is the “Nature of Preserving Family Memories through Quilting” workshop, where attendees will have the opportunity to create their own story quilts under the guidance of experienced artists and storytellers. A story quilt, a captivating collage of symbols and shapes stitched together with fabric, serves as a visual narrative of personal or shared memories.

Kicking off the event is renowned quilter Sauda A. Zahra, who will share insights into the creation of the Durham History Quilt, currently on display at the Museum of Durham History. Zahra will showcase the Museum’s innovative Memories of Durham Digital Story Quilt interactive website as a source of inspiration for participants.

From 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM, attendees will have the privilege of working with teaching artist Delaney Susi, who will provide materials and techniques for crafting their unique story quilts. Whether depicting Durham landmarks, cherished family tales, or original designs inspired by personal narratives, participants will have the opportunity to bring their stories to life using simple fabric collage techniques appropriate for all levels.
