Thinking of Tom Krakauer

A message from Patrick Mucklow, Executive Director | Museum of Durham History

Earlier this week, I heard the terribly sad news that we lost our friend, Tom Krakauer. A passionate advocate for community institutions, Tom played a pivotal role in laying the foundation for our organization. After an accomplished career leading and growing the Museum of Life and Science, he essentially came out of retirement to help establish the Museum of Durham History—serving as our first Board Chair, working closely with Jane Goodridge and Barker French to build a strong, committed Board of Directors.

Tom’s determination and belief in the power of personal stories helped turn a bold idea into a living, growing institution. We are forever grateful for his generosity, dedication, and the legacy he leaves behind. He believed in what we are building here: a place where Durham’s stories could be shared, celebrated, and preserved. His leadership and heart are a big part of why we’re here today.

We will have more to share in the coming days. For now, our thoughts are with Tom’s family, friends, and all those who were fortunate enough to know him.
