Julian Shakespeare Carr incorporated the Golden Belt Manufacturing Company to produce cotton bags in which to sell Blackwell’s Bull Durham tobacco. Three years before, Carr had introduced the textile industry to Durham by forming Durham’s first textile mill – the Durham Cotton Manufacturing Company.
