Free and open to the public
Join the Booker T. Spicely Committee and the Museum of Durham History for a special program honoring Pfc. Booker T. Spicely on what would have been his 116th birthday.
This community event will center on an intimate conversation with members of the Spicely Family, including Artrelle Spicely and Cynthia Mitchell, whose parents were Booker Spicely’s first cousins. Together, they will reflect on how their family learned Pfc. Spicely’s story, what it has meant to see his legacy recognized publicly, and the broader tradition of military service and courage within the Spicely family.
In addition, several of the outdoor banners from the exhibit, Booker T. Spicely: Citizen, Soldier, Martyr, Hero currently on display at the Museum of Durham History (which share Spicely’s story and his stand against Jim Crow segregation on Durham’s buses) will be exhibited in the concourse outside the library’s auditorium.
This event is part of the Museum’s ongoing collaboration with the Booker T. Spicely Committee to preserve and share the story of Pfc. Booker T. Spicely, whose life and legacy continue to inspire Durham and beyond.
