Learning and Volunteering: Local College Students Make a Visit to the MoDH

We’ve had some wonderful groups spending time at the Museum recently, and we’re feeling incredibly grateful for the energy local college students bring into our space.

A group from the Duke University School of Medicine (pictured at bottom) stopped by to learn more about Durham’s Latino community and its history from the talented storyteller and musician, Alexandra Valladares, who is also a former Durham Public Schools Board of Education member. Their curiosity, thoughtful questions, and genuine interest in Durham’s cultural heritage made the visit especially meaningful. Moments like these remind us how important it is to connect students with the stories that shape our city. A huge shoutout to MoDH Board Member and Duke University Medical School’s Dr. Jeffrey Baker for organizing this educational field trip for his resident students!

We also want to celebrate the amazing graduate students from North Carolina Central University (pictured at top) who joined us for a volunteer service day! Their enthusiasm, teamwork, and dedication made a huge difference helping to give the Museum a nice deep clean, and we were inspired by how eager they were to give back to the community.

It’s heartening to see young people leading with service and pride in Durham. We’re so appreciative of their time and effort. Thank you to both groups for bringing so much positivity, and for helping us keep Durham’s stories alive!
